I DID END UP sending in my application to WVU.

It was an action born out of necessity.

There is only one law school in the entire state of West Virginia, and since I knew absolutely nothing at the time about the process, I just assumed I had to attend the same undergrad university where I wanted to study law. Like one big seven-year program that was take it or leave it. And ever since I was little, dressing up in Goldie’s pink Sunday school suits and watching Perry Mason and Matlock with her while pretending I had clients to meet with, I have always known that one way or another I would go to law school.

Now, you might think it’s strange that I could on the one hand be so absolutely convinced I was going to fail out of college, while at the same time be so determined to see that law school dream come true. But therein lies the tension for people who grew up like me: a fear of failure constantly embattled with an almost compulsive need to achieve.

The girl in the trailer and the girl who so desperately wanted to exist after the trailer, both bitterly embroiled and at war with themselves. And both knowing full well that they would never forgive themselves if they didn’t at least try.

Just like that, WVU was back on the table. I requested an application packet, filled everything out, and sent it back in by the first day of admissions.

It was the only school I applied to.

It never even occurred to me to look out of state.
